So this should push me along which is good. I'm also not technically sure mine is a coin quilt, as all the examples show rectangles, whereas mine is squares (using a charm pack) but I don't care I'm going to play along. I used one and a bit packs of charm squares from TulaPink's Nest range. I love it and I think it would be great for a pre-teen aged girl.<br /><br />There are some truly beautiful quilts on the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2009coinquiltpiecealong/pool/">flickr page</a> which is very inspiring. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHCn_yowVSG1fGAOD1pAk2APxP04lCEwkwo1dR-epQ_xa6hH2_y_PKDTvTj785ThFH3Sq7feJxTTH6kKifNgQP5Z2FrPQ3eh2qBD9bpFkKWLbmqyrR4H63ANo-R-WOyT2CIuPrmpP6CZc/s1600-h/coin+quilt+button.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 1px; height: 1px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHCn_yowVSG1fGAOD1pAk2APxP04lCEwkwo1dR-epQ_xa6hH2_y_PKDTvTj785ThFH3Sq7feJxTTH6kKifNgQP5Z2FrPQ3eh2qBD9bpFkKWLbmqyrR4H63ANo-R-WOyT2CIuPrmpP6CZc/s320/coin+quilt+button.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5305448754737249202" border="0" /></a>Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-43749509898345062422009-02-19T22:06:00.000-08:002009-02-19T23:15:10.354-08:00Fat Quarter QuiltI had a few fat quarters that I really loved, and wanted to showcase, so I went with a really basic pattern, with linen sashing<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3323/3190204579_b2ff27051f.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 500px; height: 375px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3323/3190204579_b2ff27051f.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />I went with a pieced binding, which I love<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3369/3190205617_1d1f3c6028.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 375px; height: 500px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3369/3190205617_1d1f3c6028.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Also a good chance to practise my free motion quilting, which thankfully is getting better!<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3429/3191051920_bd07ac8eed_b.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 1024px; height: 768px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3429/3191051920_bd07ac8eed_b.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-51751962398853570832009-02-04T21:21:00.000-08:002009-02-04T21:35:57.791-08:00Stash alert!Over at <a href="http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=731">Sew, Mama, Sew </a>they are doing a section about fabric stashs so I thought I would give it a go. I will try and take a picture at some point, but my craft room is so messy it is embarrassing...<br /><br /><ul><li>What do you usually sew?</li></ul>Quilts mostly, some bags, some clothes. I'm hoping to do more clothes, and I'm taking a community dressmaking course.<br /><ul><li>When you shop for fabric, what size cuts do you usually buy? (i.e. If you see something beautiful, but you don’t have a use for it right away, how much do you buy?)</li></ul>Mostly fat quarters, as quilt fabric in NZ is very expensive, so a fat quarter is a nice amount of money to spend.<br /><ul><li>Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?</li></ul>Impulse!<br /><ul><li>Are you a pre-washer? If you are, do you wash your fabric before you need it, or only when you’re ready to use it?</li></ul>No prewashing for me, when I want to use fabric i'm not about to mess round washing it.<br /><ul><li>Do you iron it?</li></ul>not until I use it<br /><ul><li>How do you sort it? (color, print size, collection, etc.)</li></ul>I sort by type, quilt vs upholstery vs dress, then by colour, then by size. My stash is primarily quilt fabric.<br /><ul><li>Do you have any special folding techniques?</li></ul>No, just whatever fits in the tray<br /><ul><li>How do you store your fabric?</li></ul>I have a four layered tray thing on wheels for quilt fabric and plastic tubs for other things.<br /><ul><li>What tips do you have for building up a well-rounded stash?</li></ul>Buy what you like! not what you think you need, or what is "in fashion"<br /><ul><li>When do you say enough is enough?</li></ul>When the quilt fabric doesn't fit in the trays.<br /><ul><li>What are some of your favorite stash-busting projects?</li></ul>Quilts, its good that you can do a bit of a quilt top at a time<br /><ul><li>Do you have a current favorite print in your stash? Let’s see it!</li></ul>I don't have one favourite, but lots of fun japanese prints<br /> <a href="http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=731"> </a>Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-42734363787816300472009-01-29T21:04:00.000-08:002009-01-29T21:25:12.569-08:00More KnittingI was so excited about my new-found ability to knit, that I've taken on two more projects. I'd like to make a big quilt to replace the one we have on our bed, as it was one of my first attempts, and there are some weird things going on with it.<br /><br />I'm going to use this <a href="http://www.patchpieces.com/Flyinggeese.html">method</a> for making the flying geese units, and so I've cut out a whole bag of 5" squares from my scrap.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/3164466360_1e5254aa5c_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 180px; height: 240px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/3164466360_1e5254aa5c_m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br /><br />and I close my eyes and pull out 10 pieces at random each week<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3114/3163629405_1164c358f7_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 180px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3114/3163629405_1164c358f7_m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>and make the flying geese!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1008/3164465738_9816f1a8c7_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 180px;" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1008/3164465738_9816f1a8c7_m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />At this point I think I'll need about 800 units, and I'm going to try and do 10 5" squares a week, which gives 40 units, so a long term project it will be!Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-12407291161133276932008-12-29T14:25:00.000-08:002008-12-29T15:00:10.665-08:00Christmas quilts part three!here is a quilt for my granny for christmas. I bought two jelly rolls from Connecting Threads, and althought they're not my kind of colours, my granny really liked them. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3296/3047699466_00459efd3d_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 180px; height: 240px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3296/3047699466_00459efd3d_m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>Here is the block detail<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3226/3047697652_c76c1985d5_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 180px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3226/3047697652_c76c1985d5_m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />And here is the detail of the quilting, turned out to be a pretty difficult pattern to quilt on my wee brother machine, lots of turning the whole thing through the arm of the machine.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3141/3047700354_6cccfca39d_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 180px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3141/3047700354_6cccfca39d_m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-87301996554196484982008-12-27T14:19:00.000-08:002008-12-27T14:43:47.893-08:00Planning for 2009I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of quilting projects that I wanted to do in 2009 so that I can do a bit of planning<br /><br /><ul><li>finish quilt-a-long quilt from crazy mom quilts - I've done 8 blocks so far<a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com"> http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2008/02/finishing-your-quilt-top-part-1.html<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span></a></li></ul><ul><li>coin quilt with the two charm packs of moda nest that I bought</li></ul><ul><li>keep going with the grandmothers garden quilt that I feel like I've been doing forever</li></ul><ul><li>a scrappy log cabin quilt</li></ul><ul><li>a scrappy flying geese quilt - I've got a lot of scraps...</li></ul><ul><li>some quilts for the NICU<br /></li></ul>thats all I can think of at the moment, sort of seems like enough! althought I'm sure I'll whind up doing more...Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-1646641633315204332008-12-26T11:57:00.000-08:002008-12-26T12:03:20.692-08:00Christmas quilts part two!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3030/3046860507_5d05bf0a7c_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 180px;" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3030/3046860507_5d05bf0a7c_m.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />So now all the christmas quilts have been gifted I can show them off. The frayed bits are getting more and more frayed and cosy as the blanket is used which is niceBridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-87760783342514306252008-12-05T01:25:00.001-08:002008-12-05T01:33:39.935-08:00Mr Quilty<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/32415932@N07/3046867691/" title="photo sharing"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3160/3046867691_a129246afa_m.jpg" alt="" style="border: 2px solid rgb(0, 0, 0);" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"><br /><span style="margin-top: 0px;font-size:0;" ><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/32415932@N07/3046867691/"><br /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/32415932@N07/"></a></span></div>this was a project from an issue of australian homespun, a magazine that I think is really on the up and up.<br /><br />I love the pig fabric on his tummy, and this was also my very first attempt at free motion quilting ever!<br /><br />and here is Mr Quilty in profile! Its 27" square, which is pretty much the only requirement they have for donated quilts, that and they have to be cotton.<br /><br />I really like the idea that these quilts are used for people that really need them, and that they might give some families some comfort at a really stressful time. <br /><br />At the moment the NICU doesn't have enough quilts for the families to be able to take them home, so this is their long term plan, so hopefully I can help with that.Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1218272612283996320.post-2471315332005546822008-11-29T23:49:00.000-08:002008-11-29T23:52:18.773-08:00I'm on the blogosphere! So after lots of umming and aahing and wondering if I had enough interesting stuff to write about, I've decided to give blogging a go!<br /><br />So be patient with me while I get into the groove of blogging...Bridgethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10504080788090835285noreply@blogger.com1
